Kathy Oja is strongly drawn to the ethnic arts of different cultures, the art that emerges organically from people and their cultures, not from art schools. In particular, she is entranced by the colors, the textures, and the graphic symbolism found in their primitive imagery. She has discovered that certain symbols transcend many cultures and seem almost universal. Her paintings emerge from a rich confluence of cultural, spiritual and artistic traditions. If her works could speak, they would tell stories of her process of exploring her favored elements of color, pattern and form using a variety of surfaces and materials.
